20SL2, McLaughlin Site

These ancestors were returned to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan on August 25, 2022.

During the fall and winter of 1994, human skeletal remains were disturbed by house basement construction. The property owner, the police, and a team from the Office of the State Archaeologist collected the partial remains of a minimum of nine individuals. Only part of one individual was excavated in situ; the rest consisted of fragments scattered around the worksite. The remains were brought to Michigan State University for analysis by Anthropology Professor Dr. Norman Sauer. After the analysis was completed, the property owner directed that the remains be turned over to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan for reburial. This was recorded as being done in 2000, but on April 26, 2019, the remains were found in the Michigan State University’s Forensic Anthropology Laboratory. In
November 2019, the State Archaeologist confirmed that Michigan State University has possession and should proceed with NAGPRA implementation.
