MSP Case 58-1951

Published to the Federal Register on September 8, 2020. These ancestors were returned to the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi on December 15, 2020.

On July 28, 1958, human remains were disturbed during the construction of a private boating club. Two construction workers discovered the remains when they uprooted the stump of an Elm tree to level the surface. The remains were embedded in the roots of the tree. The workers alerted the Michigan State Police, who assigned the remains with a case number (58‐1951). On October 4, 2017, the remains were found at Michigan State University's Forensic Anthropology Laboratory.

These individuals were not originally listed on MSU's NAGPRA inventory, as they were not associated with the MSU Museum but with the Forensic Anthropology Lab. In 2019, it was decided to condense our efforts and only have one department providing NAGPRA listings.
