Huron/Sanilac County

FA 039-06

Published to the Federal Register on September 15, 2020

These ancestors were returned to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan on August 25, 2022.

On August 1, 2006, a complaint was filed with the Howard City Police Department about human remains that had been kept in an attic since 1950. The complainant's father passed away in 1950, and the remains were kept in an attic until the complainant (who asked the police to remain anonymous) alerted the police. In 1920, the complainant's father found the remains near the Lake Huron shore, eroding out of the north side of a creek that used to run into the Lake, possibly where Huron County and Sanilac County meet. The complainant's father believed the area was an Indian burial ground. On the south side of the creek, there was a Native American camp.

These individuals were not originally listed on MSU's NAGPRA inventory, as they were not associated with the MSU Museum but with the Forensic Anthropology Lab. In 2019, it was decided to condense our efforts and only have one department providing NAGPRA listings.

The following documentation is available upon request:

  • Email correspondence between the police and Dr. Norm Sauer (Physical anthropologist at MSU)
