On August 28 and 29, 1970, human remains were excavated by Michigan State University. The University, under contract with the City of Bay City, conducted preliminary testing near a proposed future Marquette Viaduct replacement.This initial block excavation revealed two burials, containing a minimum of three individuals. Burial 1 also contained several associated funerary objects.

These ancestors were included in the Federal Register notice (you can access it here as a pdf) published on October 28, 2021. The physical transfer to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan was completed on August 25, 2022.

The Notice of Inventory Completion was published in the Federal Register on September 9, 1996 for 145 individuals and 65,160 associated funerary objects. The ancestors and associated funerary objects were repatriated/transferred to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan on October 11, 1996 and October 15, 1996.
