On August 28 and 29, 1970, human remains were excavated by Michigan State University. The University, under contract with the City of Bay City, conducted preliminary testing near a proposed future Marquette Viaduct replacement.This initial block excavation revealed two burials, containing a minimum of three individuals. Burial 1 also contained several associated funerary objects.

These ancestors were included in the Federal Register notice (you can access it here as a pdf) published on October 28, 2021. The physical transfer to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan was completed on August 25, 2022.

The ancestors and associated funerary objects were repatriated/transferred to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan on October 11, 1996 and October 15, 1996.
